The Queens Campus recently held a special 9/11 tribute for New York’s Firefighters and Police Department. Guests included: Council Member Daniel J. Halloran, NYPD Deputy Inspector Brian Maguire and FDNY Firefighter Matt Mattola. GNYADA sat with the honorees at the dais.
There were many high points of the day. Inspector Maguire shared a story of how the Queens Director of Admissions showed up at the 109 Precinct to personally invite him. As he said, “it was her persistence that has me here today.” Council Member Halloran shared his story of losing his firefighter cousin on 9/11, and how the fallen hero left behind small children. He had the audience cheering as he spoke of the important technical education students are receiving at Lincoln and how he is a car guy, refurbishing cars - and will reach out to them for assistance! One of the Honor Guards spoke with the Inspector from the 109th Precinct, revealing that the student’s uncle gave up his life in the line of duty – and the street outside the 109th Precinct is named in honor of his uncle. It was a touching, moving and inspirational day for all attendees.
The Queens Campus airbrushed a hood commemorating 9/11 which will hang in the campus lobby entrance. The FDNY and NYPD were also presented with plaques that honored their heroic service.
